Some New Year Advice

I was recently asked to write a few words about my work for a local zine and ended it with a few bits of advice:

- Stick to deadlines and keep in constant communication with the client.

- Always consider every opportunity, as you never know what it could lead to.

- Don't undersell yourself, as you've got a unique gift and people should respect that.

- Try and have fun, even if your working on a brief which isn't tremendously exciting!

- Make time for yourself and for your friends... sometimes going to a gig or reading a book can refocus your head before getting stuck back into a project.

In recent news I did this little drawing for a friend's new zine called COLLARBONE, which is in Spring.

Really just to test this out I thought I'd upload two recent pictures that I've been thinking about this evening.

The first is an etching. I've spent a very long time making this and a very long time looking at it tonight. After smoking many cigarettes I've been forced to admit what I already knew; it's not finished and isn't going into the frame I've had made for it and isn't going up to London tomorrow with the others. If I let it go like this all I'll ever be able to see in it is what it could have been.

The other image is a birthday card that I made for a friend and masking taped outside the front door of her flat very late the other night. Although the first sausage I painted didn't quite look right, the whole thing didn't take very long at all and I really rather like it.

Some things take a long time and some things don't. It's not always about time, but it maybe it is always about the opinion of the inner censor. And the more I think about this man the more I think he might really be quite important. Sat high in a wobbly homemade chair crossing out lazy words in bad poems he's quite often the only person who really gives a shit and the only reason this whole thing is worth doing. And if you remember it was on his advice that you turned your back on chartered accountancy and all the fancy things like security and saloon cars that come with it. So you are stuck listening to his music, and you might as well dance.

Drawing Live

DRAWN RECORDINGS is an exciting night that happens in Bristol and Simon Mills and I have been doing some live drawing at a few of these nights. There is a time lapse video here (or click onto my Facebook page), which is quite fun to watch. On the most recent night the very amiable and talented Ben Steers joined in too. Working on all parts of the paper together we created a mountain of doodles and characters topped off by a conquering flag adorned with the DRAWN logo. Fun!

design thoughts

Hi everyone,

On the first blog I wanted to tell you all and let you know about my steps into the world of Graphic design. I am Liz May, but I work under the name of design thoughts as I feel it is catchy and reflects in what I do.

My poster and idea for this project came about whilst I was at University, 'if in doubt doodle' carry a notebook around with you, and gain inspiration in whatever you can. (the smaller the notebook the better, you can take it everywhere with you) I found that in my third year, and most importantly now, I would gain and still do, an idea, thought etc...whenever. So in order to keep hold of an idea I would jot it down, and find it useful later.

I wanted to put a blog on here, to let people know how I have felt since leaving University, and would welcome other peoples thoughts on this to...

This is what I have thought of so far...

I have (or think I have) gained even more of a sense of my own style of Graphic design, and have become more confident at pushing an idea

I have been on countless job interviews, but unfornatly have not got anywhere so far on this, however I have achieved my dream more on pushing my freelance side of Graphic design instead (hence design thoughts)

I don't think that a 1st or 2:1 is the be all and end all of Uni, I came out with a 2:2 and appreciate working hard to get an interesting project.

Right if this has been abit waffly, sorry, but will keep you all posted soon on how design thoughts progresses

Campags and Camping

In August I made the equally pleasurable and painful journey from Exeter to Bude, on the coast of Cornwall. With a bike a tent a camera and a friend, not realising just how hilly that part of England actually is. There’s a little piece I wrote for Level here with photographs by myself and Simon Peplow. I recently took part in the third INKYGOODNESS exhibition, called 'WONDERLAND'. It was in the VAAD GALLERY, which is part of the CUSTARD FACTORY complex in Birmingham. I wanted to do something a little different with my Birdboy character, so adapted an idea I'd tried out a while ago in another exhibition: cardboard cut-outs! Some blisters later and hey presto! I'd got myself a tree growing out of Birdboy.

Just finished aanouther poster for the lovely peope at the Barfly and BSM. This show is gonna destroy. I heard Adebisi SHank Last week and they blew my socks clean off.

Working on Some killer posters and projects this week. I feel very lucky!
